1. Background and Purpose

Dr Peter Buchanan was a Foundation Fellow of the College. He believed in the need for excellence in emergency medicine at a time when this was an embryonic concept in Australia and New Zealand. He demonstrated the value of specialists and trainees in emergency medicine at a time when such positions were almost unheard of, even in the major teaching hospitals in Australia. Dr Peter Buchanan was widely respected.

The prize was named in recognition of Dr Buchanan’s outstanding contributions to the College and to the development of the specialty of emergency medicine.

This policy governs the criteria for the awarding of the Buchanan Prize, which is awarded to the highest achieving candidate in each cohort of any sitting of the Fellowship Clinical Examination (OSCE) of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM/the College) on their first attempt at that examination.

2. Selection Process

2.1 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who pass the Fellowship Examination (Clinical) are eligible for consideration of the Buchanan Prize.

The Examination Committee reserves the right not to award the prize for any sitting of the Fellowship Clinical Examination (OSCE); however, must notify the Council of Education of this decision.

2.2 Selection Criteria

The prize shall be awarded to the candidate with the highest score in a cohort, on their first attempt at the Fellowship Clinical Examination (OSCE). If two or more such candidates in each OSCE cohort attain the same score, the prize shall be awarded to both/all candidates.

3. Award Presentation

3.1 Nature of Prize

The prize consists of a bronze medal and a certificate.

3.2 Presentation of Prize

The prize shall be presented annually to the prize winner(s) at an ACEM College Ceremony.
