1. Background and Purpose 

The prize was named in honour of Associate Professor Joseph (Joe) Epstein in recognition of his efforts in establishing the Primary Examination. Associate Professor Epstein was prominent in the field of Emergency Medicine in Victoria when he was elected a Foundation Fellow of the College in 1983. He was the first College Censor for Victoria and was appointed Deputy Censor‐in‐Chief and Chair of the Primary Examination Committee in 1984. Associate Professor Epstein was President of the College from 1988 to 1992. This policy governs the criteria for the awarding of the Joseph Epstein Prize, which is awarded to the highest scoring candidate in a sitting of the Primary Examination (Viva) of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM; the College).

 

2. Selection Process 

2.1 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who pass the Primary Examination.

2.2 Selection Criteria

The prize shall be awarded to an eligible candidate who is judged to have shown the best and sufficient overall proficiency in the Primary Examination (Viva). The prize may be awarded jointly or severally if two or more such candidates are judged equally proficient. The prize shall be awarded to the highest achieving eligible candidate according to the following ranked criteria:

  1. The candidate who achieved the highest score in the Primary Examination (Viva).
  2. If two or more candidates tie using criterion 1, then the candidate who attempted the Viva examination the least number of times.
  3. If two or more candidates tie using criterion 2, then the candidate who attempted the Primary Examination (Written) the least number of times.
  4. If two or more candidates tie using criterion 3, then all tied candidates are awarded the prize.

 

Award Presentation

3.1 Nature of Prize

The Joseph Epstein Prize consists of a bronze medal and a certificate.

3.2 Presentation of Prize

The prize shall be presented annually to the prize winner/s at the annual College Ceremony.
