1. Purpose and scope

This policy governs the awarding of the Mika Ah Kuoi Fiji Masters of Emergency Medicine Award, which is awarded to the highest scoring Masters of Emergency Medicine candidate of the Fiji National University.

 

2. Background

The award is named in honour of Dr Mika Ah Kuoi in acknowledgement of his courage, humour, talent, leadership, drive, and compassion – all essential qualities of an emergency physician.

Dr Ah Kuoi tragically died while enrolled in the Masters of Emergency Medicine program at Fiji National University and would have graduated with the first cohort of students in 2016.

 

3. Fiji Masters Of Emergency Medicine Award

3.1 Nature of Award

The Fiji Masters of Emergency Medicine Award consists of a medal and educational materials up to the value of AUD $500.

3.2 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who successfully complete the Masters of Emergency Medicine program at Fiji National University are eligible to receive the award.

3.3 Selection Criteria

The award shall be presented to an eligible candidate(s) who obtained the highest score in the Masters of Emergency Medicine at Fiji National University. The award may be given jointly or severally if two or more such candidates are judged equally proficient.

The award shall be presented to the highest scoring eligible candidate(s) according to the following ranked criteria:

  1. The candidate who achieved the highest score in the Fiji Masters of Emergency Medicine final exam.
  2. If two or more candidates tie using criterion 1, then the candidate who achieved the highest score in the research project will receive the award.
  3. If two or more candidates tie using criterion 2, then all tied candidates are presented with the award.

3.4 Presentation of Award

The award shall be presented annually to the award winner/s at the annual Fiji National University Graduation Ceremony.
