1. Background and Purpose
Established in 2018, the Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program Scholarship aims to increase the number of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Māori medical practitioners completing the Associateship in Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program (FEMTP) in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
2. Scholarship
2.1 Nature of Award
The award consists of a monetary scholarship available to a registered medical practitioner who identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander or Māori. The scholarship amount covers the full value of the ACEM Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program fee.
2.2 Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be eligible for and have enrolled in the ACEM Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program. Eligibility requirements for the Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program are set out in Regulation D3.1, which provides:
D3.1.1 To be eligible to enrol as a trainee in the ACEM Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program medical practitioners must hold appropriate registration with the relevant regulatory body as applicable for the jurisdiction in which they are intending to train.
D3.1.2 To be eligible to commence the ACEM Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program, medical practitioners must:

- be in their second or subsequent postgraduate year;

- have previously completed a minimum of 10 FTE weeks in an Emergency Department;

- not be enrolled in the FACEM Training Program or the ACEM Intermediate Emergency Medicine Training Program (IEMTP)

The College, through the ACEM Foundation, is committed to increasing the number of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Māori medical practitioners completing the Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. In order to encourage application for the scholarship, the number of scholarships available in any calendar year is not capped.
2.3 Application process
Registered medical practitioners who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander or Māori and who meet the eligibility criteria outlined in 2.2 above may apply for the scholarship at any time of the year. FEMTP trainees may only apply for the scholarship on one (1) occasion and must do so within 12 months of the date of enrolling in the Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program.
Each application must:
- be submitted on the appropriate Application Form;
- provide a letter/s of support from a colleague and/or community elder which demonstrates a commitment to supporting you to complete the Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program and highlights your links to your community.

2.4 Selection Process
Applications will be assessed by the ACEM Associateship Programs team to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria, before review by the ACEM Foundation for endorsement.
The ACEM Board shall determine the recipient(s) of the scholarship. The decision of the ACEM Board will be final and no correspondence will be entered in to.
2.5 Presentation of the Award
The scholarship is not formally presented to the recipient; the recipient will be named through avenues such as the College’s annual report (Year in Review) for the applicable year, as well as other College sources.
A letter from the ACEM Foundation Chair will be sent to recipients as official acknowledgement of the scholarship
Should the recipient withdraw from the ACEM Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Program within 12 months of the date of enrolment without completing the program, the recipient may, at the discretion of the ACEM Foundation, be required to repay the scholarship to the Foundation.
